San Marzano 2 tomato: a productive, tasty variety

Discover the San Marzano 2 tomato, a highly productive seasonal variety, renowned for its elongated red fruits weighing 50 to 100 g, ideal for fresh and cooked uses. Learn how to sow, plant and care for this variety of Italian origin, as well as tips for a bountiful harvest and managing common diseases.

Productive and tasty variety

The San Marzano 2 tomato is a highly productive seasonal variety, offering elongated red fruits weighing 50 to 100 g, grouped in clusters of around 5 fruits. Renowned for the flavor of its dense, firm flesh, it is ideal for use fresh or cooked, especially in dried tomatoes and sauces. This indeterminate-growth variety can reach a height of around 1 m in full sun champ unstaked.

Sowing and planting

To sow the San Marzano 2 tomato, we recommend sowing from February to April on warm soil (at 20°C) or in pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse, in fine sowing soil.
After burying the seeds 1 cm deep, keep the soil moist using a sprayer. The plants can be transplanted to the ground when frosts are no longer a concern and they reach a height of 12 to 15 cm.
Be sure to space them 70 cm between rows and 50 cm apart on the row, in a sunny position. Install stakes before planting and water abundantly at the base once a week to prevent disease.

Gourmand management

Pruning tomato plants for suckers is optional, but it can help increase fruit size and earliness, and make harvesting easier. However, this method requires time and discernment. If you choose not to prune the suckers, make sure you space the plants further apart, around 1 metre, to allow them to develop fully. Another option is two-strand pruning, where only the two lateral strands are kept after the plant has been pinched back 20 cm from the ground.

Harvesting and pest management

Tomatoes can be harvested around 4-5 months after sowing. To avoid major problems such as mildew and blossom end necrosis, protect plants from rain if necessary, and maintain regular watering. A Bordeaux mixture-based treatment can also be applied to prevent mildew. Blossom end necrosis, often caused by insufficient calcium in the soil or irregular watering, can be prevented by regular and abundant watering, at least once a week.
