Merveille des Marchés tomato: mid-season variety

Discover the Merveille des Marchés tomato, a mid-season variety producing smooth, round fruits weighing 150-180 g, ideal for greenhouse and open-field cultivation. Learn how to sow, plant and care for this tasty tomato, as well as tips for a bountiful harvest and managing potential pests.

Tasty mid-season variety

The Merveille des Marchés tomato is a mid-season variety renowned for its round, smooth fruits weighing between 150 and 180 g. With its low-grain flesh, it offers a firm texture and delicious flavor, ideal for stuffing. This variety also has good resistance to cracking, making it easy to grow in greenhouses and outdoors champ.

Sowing and planting

To sow the Merveille des Marchés tomato, we recommend sowing from February to April on warm soil (at 20°C) or in pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse, in fine sowing soil.
After burying the seeds 1 cm deep, keep the soil moist using a sprayer.
The plants can be transplanted to the ground when frosts are no longer a concern and when they reach a height of 12 to 15 cm.
Be sure to space them 70 cm apart between rows and 50 cm apart along the row, in a sunny position.
Install stakes before planting and water abundantly at the base once a week to prevent disease.

Bud management

Pruning tomato plants for suckers is optional, but it can help increase fruit size and earliness, and make harvesting easier. However, this method requires time and discernment. If you choose not to prune the suckers, make sure you space the plants further apart, around 1 metre, to allow them to develop fully. Another option is two-strand pruning, where only the two lateral strands are kept after the plant has been pinched back 20 cm from the ground.

Harvesting and pest management

Tomatoes can be harvested around 4-5 months after sowing. To avoid major problems such as mildew and blossom end necrosis, protect plants from rain if necessary, and maintain regular watering. A Bordeaux mixture-based treatment can also be applied to prevent mildew. Blossom end necrosis, often caused by insufficient calcium in the soil or irregular watering, can be prevented by regular and abundant watering, at least once a week.
