Product details

Eggplant ronde de Valence: grow tasty, hardy fruit

The round Valencian eggplant is a productive, hardy variety that produces medium-sized, round, smooth fruit of excellent quality. With a semi-erect habit reaching a height of 0.7 to 0.8 m, its slightly wavy leaves are hairy and non-prickly, while its flowers sport a light mauve hue. Fruits are a magnificent dark mauve, shiny and smooth, weighing 170 grams or more, with a diameter of over 9 cm. About 5 to 6 fruits can be harvested per plant.

Sowing advice:

Sow in a bucket of fine sowing compost between March and April, on a warm bed kept at a constant 25°C indoors or in a heated greenhouse.
Lightly cover the seeds with a few millimetres of sowing compost, then pack down.
Place your buckets near a window for good light exposure.
Be sure to lightly water the surface if the compost dries out.

Planting :

Transplant young plants measuring 15 cm into the ground at the end of May, in cool, deep, humus-rich soil with warm, sunny exposure, spacing the plants 50 cm apart in all directions.
Maintain eggplant plants by hoeing, weeding and ridging. Water regularly at the base, prune like tomatoes, and don't forget to mulch.

Favorable associations :

Plant an eggplant crop next to dwarf beans for beneficial associations.

Harvesting:

You'll be able to harvest your eggplants around 5 months after sowing, once they're well formed and mature.

Pest management:

To prevent mildew, hoe and water with nettle manure and horsetail tea. In case of infection, treat with Bordeaux mixture.

To control red spider mites, cut off and burn the affected aerial parts, then treat with black soap or nettle purin. You can also use a pyrethrum-based plant insecticide.

Handpick beetles.

To control aphids, spray with a solution of black soap or nettle purin, or use a Pyrethrum-based organic plant insecticide in the event of heavy infestation.
